Upcoming disruption & anticipating the upgrade of dynamic circuits

IBM Quantum® previously announced that a new version of dynamic circuits will be released on or around 2 June 2025. This new version will allow you to run dynamic circuits at utility scale and comes with improvements in speed, quality, and usability.

We are accelerating that timeline.

  • On or around 1 May 2025 we will:

    • Enable early access to the new version of dynamic circuits on select QPUs. Premium Plan users interested in participating in this early access can contact us.
    • Sunset the current version of dynamic circuits for all Heron QPUs.
  • Between 2 June and 16 June, we will upgrade the remaining Heron QPUs one at a time, to enable the firmware level needed for the new version of dynamic circuits. These QPUs will be unavailable for a few hours during the upgrade and thus you will experience extended queue times. We will distribute the QPU upgrade and outage calendar as soon as it is finalized.

  • Lastly, on or around 30 June 2025, we will sunset dynamic circuits support for all Eagle QPUs. Thereafter, dynamic circuits will only be available on Heron and newer QPUs. UPDATE: we will sunset dynamic circuits support for select Eagle QPUs.

As a reminder, you can find out which QPUs available to you support dynamic circuits by executing service.backends(dynamic_circuits=True) in the qiskit-ibm-runtime package.

This announcement was updated 3 June to specify "firmware level".
